A Brief Guide to Roulette Bets

Roulette might seem like a pretty straightforward game of chance, but there are lots of different bets that can be placed on each spin, making it easy for both new and seasoned players to get confused. To make things a little easier, we’ve put together a brief guide to the different Roulette bets, so the next time you play online Roulette, or try your chances at a land-based casino – you know exactly where to wager.

Read on to find out more.

Outside bets

In Roulette, bets are split into two main categories: inside and outside. These indicate the position of the bets on the table where you’ll place your chips on. For beginners, in particular, outside bets are the recommended place to start, as despite having the lowest payout, they have the best winning odds.

The outside bets include:

  • Red/black

A red/black bet is essentially a bet on either the red or black numbered segments around the wheel. This pays out 1:1 with just under a 50% chance of winning, due to the green zero(s).

  • Odd/even

A similar concept to the red/black bet, also paying out 1:1 is the prediction of whether the outcome of the spin is odd or even.

  • High/low

In Roulette, the high numbers on the wheel are 19-36, and the low numbers are 1-18. A high/low bet is placed on which group of these numbers you think the outcome will fall into. This also pays 1:1.

  • Column bets

A column bet is made up of 12 numbers. The Roulette betting table can be split up into three columns of 12 numbers, and you can place your wager on one of these. If any number in your chosen column wins, you’ll receive a payout of 2:1.

  • Dozens bets

Also covering one out of three groups of 12 numbers, a dozens bet can be placed on numbers 1-12, 13-24 or 25-36. This also pays 2:1.

Inside bets

Inside bets are the bets that – you guessed it – are situated on the inside of the Roulette table’s layout.

  • Straight-up bets

A bet on a single number. This offers the highest payout in the game – 35:1, but also serves as the riskiest choice.

  • Split bets

A split bet is a wager placed on the line that connects any two numbers on the table. If either of the numbers win, you’ll receive a payout of 17:1.

  • Street bets

Made up of any row of three numbers on the Roulette table, a street bet can pay out 11:1.

  • Corner bets

Also known as a square bet, corner bets are made up of four numbers that make a square shape on the betting table. This pays out 8:1.

  • Six line bet

Made on two adjacent lines of three numbers each, this is a bet placed on a total of six numbers by placing your chips where the two lines meet. If any of your chosen numbers win, you’ll receive a payout of 5:1.

  • Top line bet

A top line bet can be placed on the five numbers 0, 00, 1, 2, 3 and pays 6:1. This bet can only be placed when playing American Roulette, as it includes the double zero pocket, and is the only bet with a higher house edge than normal – 7.9%.

French bets

You might also hear the mention of French bets during gameplay, especially when spinning a European wheel. These are special betting options that cover certain sections of the wheel:

  • Voisins du Zero

This means “neighbours of zero” and covers the 17 numbers that are nearest the zero on the wheel.

  • Tiers du cylindre

“Thirds of the wheel” – this bet covers the 12 numbers that are on the opposite side of the wheel from the single zero.

You might also hear of rules like En Prison, which has the potential to lower the house edge when coming into play. So, with all your newfound Roulette betting knowledge, where will you place your next wager?
